What to know before you start

Screen and print units use different assumptions

Points, picas, millimeters, and inches come from physical measurement, while em and rem depend on a font or root size. CSS pixel conversions commonly assume 96 px per inch and 72 points per inch, so real printed output can still vary with application and printer settings.

Use relative units deliberately

Choose rem for values that should scale with the document root, and em for values that should follow the current component. Pixels remain useful for fine borders and raster dimensions. Check the base size before treating a relative conversion as universal.
